Turn Exhibitions to Timeline-Based Art Discovery

A Design Film Festival (DFF) explores design and its subcultures through curated films, bringing creative stories to both designers and the public, presented an unique opportunity. The project aimed to transfer the festival reflecting the development of art in each period.

My role
I collaborated with 4 senior design students (Alan, Amy, Chenny, and Faisal) to transform the new concept of browsing a film festival.

Beyond the Screen

Who is A Design Film Festival?

A Design Film Festival (DFF) is a pioneering film festival that has been celebrating the intersection of design and cinema since 2001. The festival showcases films that explore design, architecture, art, and creative culture, making these subjects accessible to broader audiences through the medium of film.

Uncovering the Gap

The Archive Challenge

The festival's extensive film archive from 2010-2019 exists as a simple exhibition listing on their website. This valuable collection of design-focused films lacks an engaging narrative that could showcase the evolution of design thinking and artistic movements across different periods. The current format fails to capture the rich historical context and artistic progression represented by these films.

Bridging Past and Present

Transform Archive into Design Timeline

The solution involves reimagining the film archive as an interactive design timeline that tells the story of creative evolution from 2001 to 2019. This includes:

  • Visual storytelling elements that highlight connections between different films and their impact on design culture
  • Interactive features allowing visitors to explore films based on themes, periods, or artistic movements
“HOW MIGHT WE transform DFF's film archive into an engaging narrative that illustrates the evolution of design and creative culture from 2010 to 2019?”

Exploring Graphic Art Directions

Iterate, Iterate, Iterate

We worked together and experimented with different combinations of typography, color schemes, and imagery. Each team member's unique perspective sparked creative breakthroughs, leading to three distinct visual directions that would showcase the festival's evolution in unique ways.

In this stage, I completed 2 design directions and most of the mockup for transforming the design's DNA.

Graphic to Digital

After experimenting will all 3 directions, the 2nd direction was chosen for the microsite, as it adapted best into Visual Design and interactions.

Adapting graphic design for microsite

Keeping the essential design qualities of the 2nd graphic art direction, we made appropriate adjustments to accommodate to the diverse content across the microsite pages and allow for smooth digital interactions.
